Highlights:

  • A perfect cone-shaped volcano covered with a big crater of 11km in diameter.
  • One of the highest active volcanoes above 6000m
  • A good non-technical option for climbers eager to conquer a 6000m peak.
  • Summit attempt

Southwest of La Paz, located in the Department of Oruro, on the border with Chile lies one of the most beautiful snowcapped mountains in the Andes, Mt. Parinacota. This mountain forms part of the western mountain range and is characterized by being a volcanic zone. Inside this national park we also find the snow covered peak Mt. Sajama; at 6500m this is Bolivia’s highest mountain and the park is home to various protected flora and faunas including the llama like Vicuñas. The park covers about one thousand square kilometers and is also home to Pumas, Andean deer and the ostrich-like Rhea.

Day 1.- La Paz – Parinacota base camp

From La Paz we head towards Sajama national park, approx. 4 hours driving. On the way you will see magnificent landscapes and some archaeological sites (including old tombs dating back to the Preinka Aymara culture) that all make up a part of Bolivia’s heritage. On board of our 4x4 vehicle we cross black volcanic sand valleys in order to get to the base camp of Parinacota. Once there, our porters will be ready to help us, carrying most of the equipment until we reach the high camp where we will set up camp.

Day 2.- Parinacota base camp – summit – base camp

An early wakeup and departure is suggested, approximately at 03:00 a.m. We will walk along the normal route for about 7 hours until we reach the summit of Parinacota at 6330m./20,762 ft. Once there we will enjoy an imposing view of Mt. Sajama and if we have clear skies we will also be able to see the Chilean lagoon Chungará which many pink flamingos call home. After a short break we start our descent until we reach our camping site at the base camp. From there our vehicles will transport us to the hot pools where we can enjoy a good soak and feel revitalized.

Day 3.- La Paz

Today we will visit the geyser field made up of over 80 different pools of boiling water and mud which vary in shape, size and temperature. This bizarre place takes us back to the origin of the formation of the earth. After some time at this magic place, we start our return journey back to La Paz.
