15d14n Llama Trek

During those 15 days, we must be prepared for all the weather conditions: Summer with sunshine, autumn with hail and quick rain and snow on the trail. We will be passing pristine Andean lakes, crossing through Inca trails and observe the Condors and countless llamas and alpacas along the valleys. The noble llama carries all the supplies for us on this trip. On clear nights, the Milky Way and southern constellations can be seen with astonishing clarity. It is advisable to be in good shape for the hike.

The best season to walk in these spectacular landscapes is from May to November.

Day 1: La Paz- Tiahuanaco- Copacabana

We will have an early departure for Tiwanaku, considered to be the most important civilization that developed during the pre-Colombian period, visiting the most representative archaeological sites, such as the Akhapana pyramid, the semi-subterranean temple adorned with transfixed limestone sculptures, representing human bean heads, as well as the local museums. In the afternoon we travel towards Copacabana village, where we spend the night.

Day 2: Copacabana- Isla del Sol

After breakfast we will take the boat to the Sun Island. On our way we will visit the Moon Island, once used as a temple that embraced the virgins of the Sun God. Then we will continue towards the southern section of the Sun Island. In Andean mythology according to legend, Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo, children of the sun god and founders of the Inca Empire, emerged from the waters of the sacred Titicaca Lake and founded the Inca Empire in the Sun Island. The trip takes app. 90 minutes. On the island, we will visit Pilcocaina Ruins considered to date back from the Inca period, then we will enjoy a tasty lunch with the best view of the lake and part of the Royal Andean Range. After a well-deserved break, we continue our hike gaining altitude, in order to find our lodge in the Yumani village. On the way we will find the fountain of youth, and the Inca gardens.

Day 3: Isla del Sol-Sorata

After breakfast, we will start our walk downhill to the harbor in the sun Island. Then we will be transferred by a motor boat to Copacabana. We will see the west of the Royal Andean Range broaden in the distance, once in the village of Copacabana we will visit the imposing cathedral that shows mudéjar influences in its design, with whitewashed stone walls and multiple domes decorated with deep blue tiles. This temple was originally build by the Augustinian order to house the miraculous Virgin de Copacabana, a beautiful image with a native Andean face, dressed in lavish robes embroidered with gold and silver thread and crowned with a golden halo. The massive gold altarpiece is also remarkable decorated with silver leaves brought from the Potosi mines and paintings from the 18th century of invaluable cost decorate the interiors of the church. After lunch on board of our vehicles we continue to Sorata village.

Day 4: Sorata - Cocoyo

Ascending in our four wheel drives while enjoying the scenic mountain roads for about 4 hours, we reach the hamlet of Cocoyo. Along the way it is possible to observe some gold mines. We will enjoy the view of Mt. Jancouma 6.427m.a.s.l one of the most sacred and impressive mountains in this area, with corn plantations and birds. Then we find a good spot for our first camping night.


Day 5:  Cocoyo - Chajolpaya

This day we will observe the Chiaroco Mountain, and the beautiful valley of Chajolpaya, located in a huge plateau divided by a winding river. On our way up to the hill we will reach the Sarani pass at 4600. Then in the afternoon will set up our camp in the splendid nature of Chajolpaya valley.

Day 6: Chajolpaya-Negruni

The trail is quite steep, and we need to keep on waking uphill in order to reach the Negruni pass a 4.960m getting closer for a nice view of the glaciers, after the pass, we descend to 4240m, where we set our camping.

Day 7: Negruni-Lloco Lloconi. (Also named Chearoco)

We descend slowly to Palca valley, where there are several small plateaus and scenic views of this valley, in the afternoon we walk along Chiquinis´ River with an average altitude of 4000m. In the afternoon we start with a soft hiking uphill and then camping at 4.220m, 5 hours and a half trekking.

Day 8: Lloco Lloconi-Janqu lacaya

Today is quite a hard one. We will have to get across two mountain passes, walking near the skirts of the mountain, until we reach the pass at 4800m. From there the views are beautiful. In the afternoon we arrive to a large grassy plateau, our next camping site will be at 4.620m.

Day 9: Janqu Lacaya-Quta thiya.

A long traverse takes us the next valley where we will see many torrents of water, that continuously descend forming little lagoons that will finally pour its waters to the Quata Thiya Lake. In the afternoon we will get to the bottom of a valley protected by granite peaks, camping at 4.350m, 7 hours trekking.

Day 10: Leisure Day

A day of leisure, a vehicle will meet us with fresh supplies from La Paz.

Day 11: Quta thiya. -Ajuani.

With renewed energies we start hiking up to the pass, and descend until we get to a beautiful area where we have some pristine lakes around. 4.450m. Then we slantingly ascend to the east of the lake Chiara Khota, in order to reach the pass at 4800m. In the afternoon we arrive to the Ajwani Lake, 4 hours trekking.

Day 12: Ajwani-Lago Juricota.

Today we continue ascending through a mountainous path, we cross the pass of 4700m. That allows us to observe the impressive “Huayna Potosí”, and to descend to a place for an ideal camping site, in the lagoon Janchallani 4500m. 6 hours of trekking.

Día 13: Juricota- Tuni-Condoriri

Today we will see the impressive snow-covered top of the colossus “Condoriri” walking near the Austria Top and from this step we begin to descend until to the base camp of the Tuni Condoriri lagoon, after 7 hours of long walk we find the Chiara khota at 4600m

Día 14: Tuni Condoriri- Maria Lloco

It's time to say goodbye to the lovely camp site of Chiarkhota. We trek across the mountain pass of Sistaña 4.900m into the northern valley, descending fields of puna grass, until we reach our camping in a good spot at 4.450m at the base of  Maria Lloco mountain (5.222m)

Today's hiking time will be approximately 8-9 hours.

Camping in tents

Day 15:  Maria Lloco - Milluni Lake - Return to La Paz.

We will reach a pass of Huallatani (4.850m) and walk towards moraines, on the way you will see the Milluni Lake, and if the weather is clear you’ll be able to see the snowy peak of Huayna Potosi 6088m, soaring overhead. At the base, our vehicle will be waiting for us. At this point we return to La Paz, two hour’s drive.

Today's hiking time will be approximately 3-4 hours
