DESCRIPTION: MOUNTAIN CLIMBING ON THE HUAYNA POTOSÍ MOUNTAIN
Day 1: La Paz – Base Camp
We will pick you up from your hotel in La Paz, at 09:00am, in order to start the trip to the refuge Paso de Zongo; the transportation will take approximately 2 hours in order to reach the base camp. Along the way, we will pass the small lagoon Milluni.
Once we arrive to the base-camp refuge (at 4,720 m.a.s.l.) we will have a short break and install ourselves in the mountain lodge, then we will start a 40-minute walk up the glacier to practice climbing and to get used to the altitude; after finishing the climbing practice, we will return to the base-camp mountain lodge, where we will spend the night.
Night in base camp lodge.
Day 2: Base Camp – High camp
Today after a good breakfast we start our ascent to “Campo Alto”, situated at 5000 m. The route is well marked and leads to an evident moraine edge where we will find our lodge at 5000m. After a short break we begin to check and verify our mountain gear. We will eat early and try to get some rest in order to be refreshed when we commence our climb to the summit, on the following day.
Night in high camp lodge.
Day 3: Attempt to reach the top – Return to Base Camp and La Paz
After a very early breakfast (around midnight) we will begin heading up the glacier, aiming towards the east face and arriving at the Pala. We then continue all the way to the top, arriving at the top of Mt. Huayna Potosi (6080 meters), after about six hours of ascent. Once at the top we’ll be able to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Andes Mountains and the sun rising to the east. After a while we start descending arriving once again at “Campo Alto”, and then on to the base camp where our vehicles will be waiting to drive us back to La Paz.
