9d8n Trekking Cordillera Real, Sorata Circuit

This trekking begins in the village of Sorata (northeast of the Cordillera Real) and it will quickly take us to a high point to make a beautiful trekking tour along the Illampu and Ancohuma massifs. A trekking of the foothills of the "Colossuses" that will allow us to cross sumptuous lakes and incredible trails offering unique views of glaciers and green tropical valleys.

This trip takes place through secluded valleys passing through several high passes at more than 4500m of altitude, so good acclimatization and physical condition are recommended.

Maximum altitude: 5050m

Minimum altitude: 2700m

Traveled distance: 86 kilometers approximately

Day 1: La Paz - Sorata

Departure from your hotel at 08:00am in private transport with your escort guide  and the cooks in direction of Sorata, 150 km distant from La Paz, a village with a temperate climate and located at the foot of the majestic Illampu massif (6,368m). ), Sorata is an agricultural center and also an attractive tourist center, with 3,500 inhabitants.

Day 2: Sorata – Lackatiya

In the morning we make contact with our muleteers at the exit of the town. The trek begins with a long ascent passing through Kilambaya (3,300m) for about 3 hours of trekking and 4 more hours to the hamlet of Lacatiya (3,900m), where we set up our first camp. The Illampu, with its 6,430 meters of altitude, is shown in its entire splendor if it is not cloudy.

Day 3: Lackatiya - Utjaña Pampa

Leaving Lackathiya, the ascent is slow and leisurely, you are beginning to feel the height, it is about 3 hours of ascent until you reach the highest point the Illampu pass (4730 masl), if the weather is good, the reward is the best view, as the snowy Illampu mountain domain the entire route, at this point we will start descending to the hamlet of Utjaña Pampa (3890m), where we will set up our camp. From the Illampu pass at 4,750m you can see the Schulze peak (5,950m alt.) and the Illampu North peak (6,370m)

Day 4: Utjana Pampa - Cocoyo

In the morning we will climb the Kharahuasi pass (4450m); from this point we begin to descend to Cocoyo,  a mountain valley that is simply spectacular in terms of landscape. Upon reaching the valley, we cross the Cocoyo River, its milky-colored waters clearly show us its glacial origin. In the valley there is a mining population that also bears the name of Cocoyo (3510m). Beyond the town we will find ourselves in the Sarani valley, where we will set up our camp.

Day 5: Cocoyo - Chajolpaya Valley

We leave Sarani camp, it is a long climb until we reach the pass, Sarani (4500m). From this point we make a short descent to the Chajolpaya valley (4100m). We will establish our camp near the village in a meadow, walking time: 7-8 hours; Slope: +990m/–400m

Day 6: Chajolpaya Valley - Chojña Kota Lagoon

Walk through the Chajolpaya valley towards the Calzada pass (5050m), which is the highest point in the entire circuit, located between the glaciers of the Kasiri and Calzada Mountains. We will descend for an hour and a half along the southwestern slope of the mountain range towards the Carizal lagoon 4770m, and the Chojña Kota lagoon, where we will set up our camp. Walking time: 6-7 hours of walking; Slope: +620m/–280m

Day 7: Chojña Kota Lagoon - San Francisco Lagoon

Today we can enjoy an amazing view over the Ancohuma. We will start the walk on flat terrain until we reach the Ajoyan lagoon (4670m), from this point, we will enjoy a wonderful view of the Calzada Mountain. Then we continue until we reach the Cacha lagoon and keep our journey along the mountainside reaching a beautiful valley that houses the turquoise lagoon San Francisco (4500m). A few minutes from the camping area there are some hot springs where we can bathe peacefully.

Day 8: Laguna San Francisco - Lojena

We will go up to the Chotanlona pass, 4910m. From there we will have an incredible view of Lake Titicaca to the West, to the North we will see the Ancohuma mountain and to the East the rest of the Cordillera Real together with the Calzada and Kasiri glaciers. We will continue going up and down the mountainside and passing through small lagoons until we reach Lojena (4360m) where we will set up our camp.

Day 9: Lojena - La Paz

We will walk to the town of Milipaya (3490m), in this small town the circuit ends, where our transportation will be waiting to drive us back to La Paz. for approximately 3 hours. Once in the city of La Paz, transfer to your hotel. End of services.

The service includes:

  • English speaking trekking guide
  • All the meals, during the days of the trek, according to the description day by day.

Breakfast consists of: fruit juice, tea, coffee, chocolate, milk, cereals, yogurt, bread or pancakes, jam, in the afternoons and while the cook prepares dinner: (tea, coffee and cookies) hot water.

At noon I have cold food for lunch: sandwiches, fruit, chocolate, candies.

Dinner: Vegetable or cream soup and a main course.

  • One night of accommodation in a hotel **in the town of "Sorata". (Double base accommodation).
  • Three-season camping tents with space for three people (to be used by 2 clients)
  • Foam mattresses and inflatable mattresses
  • Privatetransport La Paz – Sorata- Millipaya – La Paz
  • Mules and muleteers to carry most of our mountain equipment: Camping material, (clients should only carry their daily backpacks) It is recommended to limit the weight per client to 8 kilos to be transported by pack animals.
  • Pukina Travel, will be provided with bags of canvas material to be carried by the mules.

The service does not include:

  • Meals in La Paz, and Sorata. (it is suggested to budget 8 to 10 usd per meal not included)
  • Accommodation and transportation outside the usual itinerary
