5d4n Sajama National Park & Uyuni Salt Flats

This once in a lifetime 4x4 adventure combines two natural wonders: The beautiful Sajama Park Reserve and the Eduardo Avaroa National Park. On the way we will pass through small picturesque towns and find beautiful natural attractions. The tours start in the city of La Paz and end in the city of Uyuni.

You can choose between two types of accommodation, from standard lodges to "Tayka" hotels or similar.

The program varies according to the season, dry season from April to October and rainy season from November to March.

Please note that during the rainy or dry season, due to weather and/or road conditions, routes and hotel reservations can sometimes change without prior notice. For this reason, the itinerary is for reference only and should not be taken as an exact itinerary of what this tour entails, please note that if we have to make changes it is for your own safety.

 

Tourist Attractions:

- Impressive views of the world's second highest volcano, Sajama 6.542m.s.n.m.

- Countless opportunities to take exceptional photographs of the snow-capped "Payachatas" or twin peaks: Parinacota and Pomerata.

- Enjoy bathing in hot springs; observe geysers and volcanic activity.

- Good chances to see wild llamas in their natural habitat (vicuñas), ibises and, if we are lucky, Andean ostrich-like rheas and the Andean fox.

- Visit the largest salt flat in the world with more than 10,000 km2. Nominated as "Wonder Number 1" by international magazines.

 

Day 1: La Paz - 4x4 adventure to the Salar de Uyuni, via Sajama NP The most incredible landscapes in Bolivia.

Our trip starts with an early pick-up in La Paz on the first day. We board a 4x4 vehicle for a scenic drive to Sajama National Park through the vast Altiplano (high plateau) for approximately 5 hours on paved road (time may vary depending on driving/traffic conditions).

Arrive at Bolivia's first national park at the foot of the impressive Mount Sajama (6,542 m) and spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the beauty of Bolivia's first protected area. Highlights include the world's tallest Queñua forest (dwarf and endemic tree species), the Huayña Khota lagoon refuge of native wildlife, and the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Sajama and other snowcapped peaks, and to end our day enjoying the healing properties of the hot springs, later returning to the lodge aboard our transportation in time for dinner.

Overnight: Tomarapi Eco Lodge or Sajama Lodge in the town of the same name, with private bathroom and hot water shower.

Meals: Lunch and dinner

Note: The program is the same during the rainy season.

 

Day 2: Sajama National Park - Uyuni or Jirira

Departing from Sajama National Park, we will travel by jeep on dirt roads with herds of llamas, alpacas and vicuñas through the vast Altiplano to the Salar de Uyuni. It is a long day of travel, but full of amazing scenery along the way. The route will parallel views of rugged, snow-capped mountain ranges; we will observe traditional villages and picturesque archaeological sites before enjoying our afternoon snack around noon. Continuing through the Altiplano, we will observe flamingo lagoons and cross the second largest (but lesser known) salt flat in the country: Salar de Coipasa, before arriving at our lodge at the northern end of Salar de Uyuni.

In the dry season: Overnight at the Tayka de Sal Hotel or Lodge in Jirira, with private bathroom and hot water shower.

During the rainy season, we will not cross the Salar de Coipasa, but we will drive along the National Route 27 and we will travel about 530 km, passing through the towns of Turco and Sevaruyo, our journey will continue parallel to Lake Poopó until we reach the town of Uyuni or Jirira.

Overnight in the town of Uyuni or the town of Jirira.

 

Day 3: Salar de Uyuni - Tayka del desierto or Huayllajara Refuge

Start with an amazing sunrise in the Salar. Today we will spend a full day exploring as much of the 12,000 km2 salt flat as possible. Highlights include a dry season visit to Incahuasi Island, a rocky outcrop covered with ancient coral rocks and giant cacti that provides an excellent base for a moderate hike and beautiful views of this white sea. Visit an old salt hotel and take time to photograph or simply enjoy the illusion of depth created by the endless white blanket of salt. In the afternoon we continue our tour to find our accommodation.

Overnight in Tayka del Desierto - Ojo de Perdiz or Huayllajara simple refuge with private bathroom and hot water.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

- During the rainy season it is not possible to visit Incahuasi Island because its access is flooded with water, but we will visit the old salt hotel, now converted into a small museum, the Monument of the Dakar.

Day 4: Lagoons Deserts and Eduardo Avaroa Reserve

We continue the expedition and today we will head further south, stopping to observe the pristine water lagoons: Cañapa, Hedionda, Honda and Ramaditas, where the wildlife is unique and the panoramic views will leave you in awe. - Possibility to observe flamingos in their natural habitat - Later we will cross the Siloli Desert, located within the boundaries of the Eduardo Avaroa National Reserve, along the border between Bolivia and Chile, stopping to observe volcanic rock formations such as the Arbol de Piedra, and then head to our lodge.

Overnight in dry or wet season: Hotel Mallku Cueva or Refugio Las Piedritas.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 5: Laguna Verde - Uyuni

Early in the morning we start our journey to the highest point of the trip: Sol de Mañana 4.860m, a field of steaming geysers that will take us back to the time of the formation of the earth. We will continue to the Laguna Verde, where we will be able to observe the imposing Licancabur volcano from the front, then we will visit the Laguna Blanca and return the same way to the town of Polques, where you can enjoy the hot springs. On the way back to Uyuni we will pass through the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve and then continue to the town of Uyuni where we will arrive at the end of the day. End of service.
